BIG THREE DISTRICTS DEVELOP JOINT ACTION PLAN

The St Johns River Water Management District (SJRWMD) became the first of three districts October 11 to approve an Action Plan for the Central Florida Coordination Area, which includes all, or portions of, Orange, Polk, Osceola, Seminole, Lake and Brevard Counties. The action plan includes regulatory, planning, and modeling components, and is designed to force public water supply utilities to develop alternative sources rather than continue to increase groundwater pumping.

The proposed action plan was developed cooperatively by Florida’s three largest water management districts, which share regulatory authority for water supply and water consumption in this rapidly developing region.

Through statutorily mandated water supply planning efforts, each of the districts have independently determined that traditional groundwater resources are insufficient to meet projected demands.

The action plan will also be discussed for approval by the Southwest Florida Water
Management District and the South Florida Water Management District during the next few weeks.
