FFVA URGES PROACTIVE APPROACH TO FOOD SAFETY

In a series of commodity-specific meetings in recent weeks, FFVA President Mike Stuart and Food Safety Consultant Dr. Martha Roberts told Producer Members that a proactive approach to Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) development for Florida fruits and vegetables is needed in the wake of recent food safety outbreaks.
"The best time to develop commodity and regionally-specific GAPs is when you're not in the midst of a crisis," Stuart said at a meeting with Members last week in Belle Glade.

"State and federal regulatory agencies are looking for industry initiative and leadership on food safety. If, or when, GAPs become mandatory for produce, they are more likely to adapt science-based standards that have already been developed and implemented by the industry," said Dr. Roberts. "It's in the industry's best interests to get ahead of the curve and control their own destiny."

Producer Members with food safety questions may call Mike Stuart at (321) 214-5200 or Dr. Roberts at (850) 875-7147.
