FFVA SEEKS FAIR TARIFF POLICIES

In comments submitted to the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative Trade Policy Staff Committee January 31, FFVA urged negotiators in the WTO Doha Development Agenda (DDA) to work toward maintaining U.S. tariffs on Florida’s import-sensitive fruits and vegetables as close as possible to current levels.

The DDA Framework Agreement provides that WTO Member countries may designate certain commodities as “sensitive.” FFVA asked that this status be given to many of the fruits and vegetable grown by FFVA Members.

“Florida’s fruit and vegetable growers can remain competitive in the global market only if the DDA commitments do a better job than the Uruguay Round in maintaining Florida’s import-sensitive tariffs,” the comments say.

Import-sensitive products for which FFVA requested exemptions from tariff reductions include tomatoes, lettuce, cucumbers, some peppers, sweet corn, avocados, oranges, grapefruit and watermelons.

The comments refined and updated several others FFVA submitted during the past five years.
