RECENT CANKER FINDS SPUR EXPORT PROTOCOL CHANGES

As a result of the recent canker finds in citrus production areas, the USDA has revised its protocol for citrus fruit being shipped to the European Union (EU). The protocol is a proactive measure designed to assure EU officials and customers that the fruit is disease free.

The revised procedures require that citrus moving to Europe must come from a grove inspected for citrus canker since October 1, 2004. Fruit from groves that fall within 3,800 feet of a positive find will not be eligible for EU certification.

For additional information, shippers should contact FDACS' Division of Plant Industry at (352) 372-3505.
