FDACS ISSUES FINAL DRAFT OF BMP MANUAL

The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) has issued the final draft of the Vegetable and Agronomic Crop BMP Manual. The draft incorporates stakeholder input gathered at eight public workshops throughout the state.

Agriculture Commissioner Charles Bronson mailed copies of the draft to industry represesntatives including FFVA President Mike Stuart, requesting comments within 30 days.

The BMP Manual will provide growers an opportunity to earn a “presumption of compliance” with state water quality standards in accordance with the Total Maximum Daily Load program. Another benefit of the manual is that it will assist FDACS in its efforts to secure future funding to help growers implement BMPs.

The publication addresses BMPs in areas including pesticide management, conservation practices and buffers, erosion control and sediment management, and nutrient and irrigation management.
