FFVA URGES FUNDING FOR SPECIALTY CROP BILL

FFVA staff conducted a series of Capitol Hill meetings with staff from Florida's congressional delegation last week to build support for funding of the Specialty Crop Competitiveness Act (H.R. 3242). The bill, which authorizes $44.5 million in block grants to states for specialty crop priorities, will not get funding unless appropriated by Congress. The bill also contains provisions on funding for USDA produce inspector training and specialty crop trade assistance.

"Florida's lawmakers are supportive of funding for the specialty crop bill," said Ray Gilmer, director of public affairs. "That support is tempered by the tight budget constraints facing Congress."

Many producer organizations worked with FFVA to secure passage of the specialty crop bill last fall, which advances the use of block grants to provide flexible funding for a variety of research and marketing initiatives. For more information, contact Mike Stuart or Ray Gilmer at (321) 214-5200.
