GAO INVESTIGATES PERCHLORATE PROCEDURES, CITES DEFENSE ACTIVITIES

The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) recently completed a study on detection and cleanup of perchlorate, a substance used in the production of rocket fuel, fireworks and other products, after it was found in drinking water, ground water, surface water, and soil, and transmitted in small quantities to some food products including lettuce. The study determined that much of the contamination was due to Defense Department activities.

GAO recommended that the Environmental Protection Agency work with federal agencies and the states to establish a structure to track and monitor perchlorate detections and cleanup efforts. EPA agreed with the study's findings, but the Department of Defense did not. Neither agency agreed with GAO's recommendations.
