LAWMAKERS SUPPORT METHYL BROMIDE CRITICAL USE EXEMPTIONS

A group of 33 members of Congress signed a letter Tuesday (June 28) to Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice encouraging the State Department to support the U.S.’s efforts to obtain critical use exemptions (CUEs) for the use of methyl bromide under the Montreal Protocol.

The letter states that the CUE process has “departed from the original fact-based analysis in favor of a more politically-based analysis that has harmed the U.S.” and that if the U.S. fails to secure the amount of methyl bromide needed by domestic agriculture, they “may be forced to resort to legislative action.”

Signers included Florida’s Adam Putnam and Mark Foley.
