SWFWMD IRRIGATION WELL BACK-PLUGGING PROGRAM IMPROVES WATER QUALITY

The Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD) is seeking additional opportunities to improve water quality through the process of back-plugging irrigation wells that have elevated chloride concentrations.

The back-plugging process, which is designed to plug the bottom portion of wells that extend into high chloride zones, can result in significant water quality improvements and improved crop production. During the past three years, more than 50 agricultural wells have been back-plugged within the priority region located in Desoto County. While this region continues to be a high priority for additional back-plugging, significant opportunities also exist in the coastal regions to remediate wells impacted by saltwater intrusion.

Qualified property owners are eligible for cost share not to exceed $6,500 per well with no limit on the number of wells per landowner. For further information on the program, Producer Members may contact the FFVA Government Affairs Office at (850) 521-0455.
