URGENT INFORMATION REQUEST – PESTICIDE RESIDUES AND INTERNATIONAL TRADE

The Environmental & Pest Management Division sent a bulletin to FFVA’s Producer Members (E & PM Bulletin No. 72, March 13, 2007, Pesticides Residues as Trade Barriers) requesting information on pesticide use to help develop a priority list for consideration by EPA as it works to resolve international trade barriers created by differential residue levels for pesticides used on raw agricultural commodities.

This effort is being coordinated through the Minor Crop Farmer Alliance and will focus its first efforts on trade issues with Canada which is a major market for Florida crops.

It is critically important that a survey for each commodity exported to Canada or other International markets is completed and returned by the deadline of March 28 in order to ensure that the information is included in the review and initial priority action list. The draft report and list will be provided to EPA April 10.

A copy of the Excel spreadsheet can be downloaded from FFVA’s website for completion and return to Daniel.botts@FFVA.com to be included in the overall effort. Please refer to the E & PM Bulletin for the link to the spreadsheet.

While the initial effort will be directed toward Canada, we are also requesting information on existing trade issues between the U.S. and other countries created by pesticide residues. An effort to coordinate resolution of these issues will then be made through Codex and the Organization of Economically Developed Countries (OECD).
