April 16, 2007 ISSUE 1162 ALLIANCE CONTINUES TO SECURE CO-SPONSORS FOR SENATE SPECIALTY CROP BILL Members of the Specialty Crop Farm Bill Alliance Steering and Legislative Committees have actively been securing original co-sponsors for the introduction of the Specialty Crop Competitiveness Act of 2007. Nine senators have been confirmed as co-sponsors. Eight are still in discussions with Sens. Stabenow and Craig, original backers of the legislation, and 19 have not yet committed to co-sponsorship. All of the uncommitted senators’ offices have received an industry letter supporting the reintroduction of the bill and a section-by-section version of the draft bill. The alliance will now focus on these 19 senators. The target date is April 19 for introduction of the Senate bill.
