FFVA AND FLORIDA AG INDUSTRY WORKING TO PROTECT IFAS BUDGET

FFVA President Mike Stuart sent a letter Feb. 14 to University of Florida President J. Bernard Machen expressing support for continued funding for ag research and extension services provided by the university’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences.

The letter said that although the challenges facing the agriculture industry today are more significant and complex than ever before, “our $96 billion-a-year industry, a key driver of Florida’s economic health, remains strong. IFAS programs play a vital role in keeping agriculture vibrant in this state. FFVA’s members rely on IFAS research and extension to stay competitive, expand their enterprises, and thrive in a global marketplace. In addition, American consumers benefit from a safe and stable food supply.”

In conclusion, the letter stated that “a crippled IFAS would indeed be a blow to Florida agriculture and ultimately to our state’s economy.”

FFVA, the Florida Farm Bureau, the Florida Agriculture Coalition and other members of the state’s agriculture industry are working together to offer their support for continued funding after Farm & Ranch News magazine reported that sources said Machen spoke about making substantial cuts to IFAS’ budget.

Machen issued a statement Feb. 11 saying the comments attributed to him were not true, but reiterated his concern that budget cuts will need to be made and that they will not be across the board.

FFVA will continue to work with the Ag Coalition by meeting with legislators and UF officials in an effort to keep IFAS from experiencing a disproportionate budget cut.
