GUIDELINES RECOMMEND MORE FRUITS, VEGETABLES

USDA and the Health and Human Services Department released the 2005 edition of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans Wednesday (January 12). The new version ups the recommended daily intake of fruits and vegetables to nine to 13 servings. The old version urged Americans to eat five to nine servings per day.

"Combined, more servings of fruits and vegetables are now recommended than for any other food group," said Elizabeth Pivonka, president of the Produce for Better Health Foundation.

The dietary guidelines will provide the basis for revision to the federal "food guidance system" (currently known as the Food Guide Pyramid), which USDA is expected to release this spring.
