BROAD COALITION JOINS AG INDUSTRY IN SUPPORT OF AGJOBS BILL

FFVA and other industry groups, farmworker advocates, Florida Commissioner of Agriculture Charles Bronson and Catholic Bishop Thomas Wenski of Orlando gathered Thursday (February 24) on the State Capitol steps to urge approval of the Agriculture Job Opportunity, Benefits and Security Act of 2005, or AgJOBS, legislation. AgJOBS would reform the H-2A guest worker program and allow workers who lack legal status, but have worked in this country’s agriculture industry for a certain period of time, to apply for permanent worker status. The legislation would also help ensure that labor is available at harvest time.

“Passage of this bill is a win, win for both growers and farm workers,” said FFVA Director of Labor Relations Walter Kates. “Farm workers will be given the legal protections enjoyed by all workers in this country and growers will be assured of a stable legal workforce during the harvest period,” he said.

Senators Larry Craig (R-Idaho) and Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.) and Congressmen Chris Cannon (R-UT) and Howard Berman (D-CA) re-introduced the legislation earlier this month. It is supported by Florida Senators Bill Nelson (D-FL) and Mel Martinez (R-FL).
