SUGAR EXECUTIVE APPOINTED TO WATER MANAGEMENT DISTRICT

Gov. Jeb Bush last week appointed Malcolm "Bubba" Wade, senior vice president of U.S. Sugar Corp., to the South Florida Water Management District. Environmentalists criticized his appointment because the district co-manages the $8.4 billion restoration of the Everglades.

Wade replaces outgoing Governing Board member Hugh English, a former FFVA chairman and citrus grower. Wade's term will expire in March of 2009.

In addition to Bubba Wade, Gov. Bush appointed Alice J. Carlson of Naples to succeed Beverly Grady. Carlson is president of AJC Associates and her term ends in March of 2007. The governor reappointed Lennart E. Lindahl of Palm City for a term ending in March of 2009. The Senate must confirm all three and Wade may face resistance from some lawmakers.
