SENATE REJECTS MINIMUM WAGE INCREASE PROPOSALS

The U.S. Senate Monday (March 7) defeated two plans designed to increase the federal minimum wage. One plan, backed by Democrats, would have increased the minimum wage to $7.25 per hour over the next three years. That plan failed 46 - 49. A more modest proposal, backed by Senate Republicans, would have raised the wage to $6.25 over two years. It failed 38 - 61.

The amendment, which would have needed 60 out of 100 votes to pass, was added to legislation tightening bankruptcy laws. The bankruptcy bill passed the Senate Thursday and is expected to move through the House next month.
