EU SEEKS TO IMPOSE TARIFFS

The European Union will seek to impose a tariff on U.S. goods including sweet corn, stationary, textiles and machinery products beginning May 1. The move is in retaliation over the Byrd Amendment, which uses funds from anti-dumping duties to provide assistance to companies affected by dumping. The World Trade Organization has called the legislation illegal and insists it be repealed.

Canada also announced Thursday (March 31) it would hit the U.S. with a 15 percent surtax on cigarettes, oysters, certain types of fish and live swine, also to take effect May 1.
