FISH LABELING GOES INTO EFFECT

Country of origin labeling for seafood went into effect Monday (April 4). It affects about 37,000 supermarkets nationwide, but not butcher shops, fish markets or restaurants.

Violators will face fines of up to $10,000 per incident. Not covered by the label rules are processed foods, including canned tuna and fish sticks, along with seafood that is cured, smoked or combined with other foods or sauces. Mandatory labeling of produce is scheduled to take effect on September 30, 2006.
