MONTANTA COUNTRY-OF-ORIGIN LABELING BILL READY FOR GOV. SIGNATURE

The Montana House of Representatives gave final approval to that state’s Country-of-Origin Labeling Act (HB 406) Thursday (April 14). The bill now heads to Governor Schweitzer’s office to be signed into law.

HB 406 will require that meat sold in Montana be labeled as to its country of origin, starting September 2006.

The bill will also allow Montana farmers and ranchers to label their products as "Made in Montana."
National mandatory labeling of mea,t as well as fresh fruit, vegetables and peanuts, is slated to go into effect next year. Most fish must already be labeled as to its country of origin.
