ISSUE 1062

VOLUNTARY LABELING LEGISLATION INTRODUCED FOR MEAT

House Majority Whip Roy Blunt, Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) and Congressman Marion Berry (D-Ark.) introduced legislation Wednesday (May 4) enacting voluntary country of origin labeling for meat products sold in American supermarkets.

The language does not include fruits and vegetables. Mandatory labeling for those commodities is still slated to go into effect September 30, 2006.

H.R. 2068, a bill to amend the Agricultural Marketing Act of 1946 to establish a voluntary program for country of origin labeling of meat and for other purposes, now goes to the House Agriculture Committee.
