JOHANNS PROMISES CANKER SUPPORT

U.S. Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns told citrus growers Thursday (June 2) that they could "count on the USDA's continued support for full eradication and for compensation" in the fight against citrus canker. Johanns met with the approximately 250 growers at a statewide industry conference in Riviera Beach hosted by Florida Citrus Mutual. Following the conference, he toured a Martin County citrus grove that had been cut down due to the disease.
Johanns did not promise that funding requests now making their way through Congress would be passed, but he repeatedly promised that USDA would do what it could to assist growers.
