SENATE PASSES DR-CAFTA

The U.S. Senate Thursday (June 30) passed the Dominican Republic-Central America Free Trade Act (CAFTA), which will extend free trade policies to the Dominican Republic and a handful of Central American countries. President Bush has endorsed the pact, but it faces opposition from the sugar industry, some labor interests and others. The bill now goes to the House where passage may be more difficult.
