LABELING BILL PASSES CALIFORNIA SENATE COMMITTEE

California Assembly Bill 1058, which would require a country of origin label on all fresh beef sold by retailers in the state, was approved June 29 by the State Senate Health Committee on a seven to four vote. Representatives from the Consumer Federation of California, Consumers Union, the California Farmers Union, the California Dairy Campaign, CalPIRG and the United Food and Commercial Workers testified for the bill.

Opponents included the California Farm Bureau, the California Cattlemen's Association, Harris Ranch, Safeway, the California Retailers Association and the California Grocers Association. Agriculture is split, with family farmers supporting AB 1058 and groups representing multi-national food processors opposed.
