ISSUE 1091
The
Coalition of Immokalee Farmworkers called on McDonalds, Inc. Monday (November
21) to pay more for tomatoes in order to pass the proceeds on to farmworkers.
The
effort is similar to one taken earlier that resulted in Taco Bell paying slightly
more for tomatoes so that farmworkers could receive better wages. The
coalition has not organized a boycott at this time; it is, however, urging consumers
to pressure McDonalds to follow Taco Bells example. McDonald's
immediately issued a statement indicating their active support for the newly-created
"Socially Accountable Farm Employers" (SAFE) code of conduct. McDonald's
suppliers will buy product from growers that participate in this program, according
to the statement. Incorporated
to meet the growing demands for labor standards certification, SAFE offers a process
for farm employers to voluntarily certify that they meet basic workplace standards.
Certification audits are conducted by a third-party company. For
additional information about SAFE, visit the programs website at www.safeagemployer.org.
