U.S.
Department of Agriculture Deputy Secretary Chuck Conner promised growers additional
assistance for hurricane damage Monday while touring devastated greenhouses and
other operations. Accompanied by Congressmen
Adam Putnam, R-Bartow, and Mario Diaz-Balart, R-Miami, as well as Florida Agriculture
Commissioner Charles Bronson and industry representatives including FFVA, he told
growers that USDA would do everything it can to help. The
group toured operations in South and Southwest Florida and heard from producers
at a Q&A session following both tours. USDA has allocated $250 million so far for Florida farms that were damaged. It has also asked for additional funds from those earmarked for Hurricane Katrina relief. And earlier this month, Sen. Martinez and Rep. Diaz-Balart introduced legislation that would provide $2 billion in disaster assistance for those producers who suffered damage from any of this seasons storms.
