The Florida Fruit & Vegetable Research & Education Foundation is administering the distribution of relief funds initiated by the state's fresh citrus industry that will assist farm workers affected during the recent hurricanes. More than $204,000 in donations was collected through a nationwide retail promotion. Industry leaders presented checks Monday (December 5) to organizations that will assist those hardest hit by the hurricanes. Catholic Charities of Arcadia received $150,000 to help provide singles housing, and Redlands Migrant Christian Association received $40,000 for its charter school in Immokalee. Local charities throughout the citrus growing areas of the state will receive the balance. Twenty-five cents from each carton of specially marked Florida oranges sold at participating retailers was donated to the Hurricane Farm Workers Relief Fund.
