ISSUE 1095

FLORIDA AGRICULTURE TO RECEIVE HURRICANE ASSISTANCE FROM USDA

Although the Agriculture Hurricane Recovery Act of 2005 lost its chance for passage Thursday (December 22) as part a $453.3 billion defense spending bill passed by the House of Representatives, language was included in the bill that would provide a minimum of $200 million for hurricane cleanup and conservation efforts.

"The hurricanes of 2005 severely crippled Florida's agricultural industry, bringing devastating economic and job loss to the region," Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL 25) said. "With the help of the Florida delegation, the sun is shining a little brighter for our growers and nursery farmers. Federal assistance will greatly help accelerate the recovery process for countless farmers and nurseries in Florida." Diaz-Balart had introduced the Agriculture Hurricane Recovery Act in the House.

Much of the money will come from Section 32 dollars. USDA’s Section 32 program earmarks a portion of customs receipts to aid the farm sector.
