USDA GRANTS ASSISTANCE TO FLORIDA AVOCADO PRODUCERS

USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) approved a petition last month filed by avocado producers in Florida under the Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) for Farmers program. Producers may now apply for TAA benefits.

FAS determined that imports of avocados contributed importantly to a decline in avocado producer prices in Florida during 2005 when compared to the applicable 1999-2004 base-period. Under the TAA program, USDA provides technical assistance and cash benefits to farmers.

Avocado producers must apply for benefits before April 4, 2006. Producers may obtain applications (form FSA-229) on the Internet at http://forms.sc.egov.usda.gov /eforms/mainservlet or from their local Farm Service Agency service center.
