EPA MAKES RECOMMENDATIONS ON PESTICIDES

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommended Thursday (August 3) that the use of some pesticides should be limited if not eliminated, while approving continued use of many other widely used insecticides. The agency announced its recommendations after completing a 10-year study of pesticide chemicals. One of those recommendations is a ban on the insecticide carbofuran. The study concluded that the substance is harmful to birds and has caused illnesses in farmworkers. Carbofuran is marketed as Furadan. EPA is proposing to phase out all use of the chemical over the next four years, with a final decision made after a 60-day comment period.
