FFVA JOINS FORCES IN CAPITOL FOR IMMIGRATION REFORM AS HOUSE VOTES TO ADD BORDER FENCING

The House of Representatives voted 283-138 Thursday (September 14) to approve a border security bill that calls for reinforced security infrastructure, including vehicle barriers and security cameras along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Prior to the vote, FFVA President Mike Stuart joined hundreds of business, labor and agriculture groups at a rally on the grounds of the U.S. Capitol to call on Congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform similar to what was passed earlier this summer in the United States Senate. The group also met with members of the Florida delegation to emphasize the needs of Florida growers and other employers.

"We continue to face significant challenges convincing House members to support comprehensive immigration reform,” said Stuart. “They need to hear that message loud and clear from our industry."

The rally dovetailed with the fall meeting of the United Fresh Produce Association, which FFVA representatives attended. Its members traveled to Washington with baskets of freshly picked American produce to demonstrate what United says America is at risk of losing: food independency and security.
