COMPANY SAYS LETTUCE IS SAFE, MEXICO STILL BANS CALIFORNIA LETTUCE The Nunes Company
of Salinas, California said Thursday (October 12) that it's confident lettuce
recalled over E. coli fears is actually safe. The company said it tested multiple
samples from more than 8,500 cartons of green leaf lettuce it recalled. All results
are said to be negative. The
company ordered the recall after irrigation water tested positive for a type of
E. coli, but further testing showed it wasn't the strain linked to fresh spinach
that killed three people and sickened nearly 200 others. The
Mexican Ministry of Health on Tuesday (October 10) blocked U.S. lettuce imports
after learning about the voluntary recall, but California Representative Sam Farr
told reporters he had learned that the ban had been lifted Thursday on all but
California lettuce. According to Farr, the Mexican government wants the U.S. government
to directly provide it with test results showing that Nunes Company lettuce is
indeed E. coli free. The Food and Drug Administration has done testing, but those
test results are not yet available. Only the tests ordered by the Nunes Company
itself yielded negative results. ALSO IN THIS WEEK'S RAP-UP (Members-Only
