NASS CONDUCTING VEGETABLE CHEMICAL USE SURVEY

USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) announced earlier this month that it will be asking vegetable growers in Florida and 18 other states to participate in the 2006 Vegetable Chemical Use Survey.

“The survey gives producers the opportunity to report first-hand information on their crop production practices, thus ensuring that accurate, real-world data are available to help governmental agencies and others make sound decisions about the future availability of crop protection products,” said Benjamin F. Klugh, Jr., director of NASS. He added that many pesticides used on fruit, vegetables and other specialty crops are classified as “minor use” and if growers do not accurately document their use of the products, they might not be re-registered.

The survey is conducted every other year, alternating with the Fruit Chemical Use Survey. The 2006 vegetable survey will run from October 1 through December 14. NASS representatives will conduct in-person interviews to gather information. FFVA encourages Members to participate.

NASS will publish the Vegetable Chemical Usage report with state and national estimates of vegetable growers’ use of agricultural chemicals in July 2007. For a copy of this report, or to obtain other agricultural statistics, visit the NASS Web site: www.nass.usda.gov.
