AG IMPORTANT TO STATE’S ECONOMY, FLORIDIANS SAY IN POLL

A recently released survey by the Agriculture Institute of Florida shows that most Floridians feel agriculture is “very important” to the state’s economy. Respondents to the poll, conducted in early September, also said that Florida-grown foods had benefits over food produced elsewhere.

The Ag Institute commissioned the Florida Survey Research Center at the University of Florida to gauge public opinion of the impact of Florida agriculture and perceptions of food and agricultural issues.

Highlights included:
- 78 percent said agriculture is “very important” to Florida’s economy.
- Respondents ranked agriculture as second only to tourism in importance to the state economy.
- Almost two-thirds of respondents (64.5 percent) said Florida-grown foods had several advantages over those produced elsewhere.
- Advantages cited included: Florida foods are fresher (43.5 percent), help the economy (48.1 percent), and are of higher quality (23.8 percent).
- 63.6 percent said that reduced agriculture production in Florida would mean more foreign-produced food in stores, and 68 percent said prices would go up.
