FEDERAL OFFICIALS FOCUS ON SHREDDED LETTUCE AS POSSIBLE E. COLI SOURCE

Although the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stated last week that they believe the most likely source of a recent Taco Bell E. coli outbreak is shredded lettuce, they also stated that the investigation remains ongoing. Investigators from the agencies had said that lettuce was the most likely culprit in the outbreak that sickened more than 70 at East Coast Taco Bell restaurants. On Friday, however, CDC told Taco Bell that the outbreak, which was linked to restaurants in four Northeastern states, is over. CDC indicated that “contamination of lettuce likely occurred before reaching the restaurants.”

CDC statements are posted at http://www.cdc.gov/ecoli/current.htm.
