LEGISLATURE TACKLES INSURANCE ISSUE IN SPECIAL SESSION

The Florida Legislature convened its special session Jan. 16 on hurricane preparedness and property insurance. The session concludes Monday (Jan. 22.) The first conference committee was held Friday (Jan. 19) between the House and Senate to consider a series of House bills and an omnibus Senate bill on these issues.

Conferees include alternating chairmen Sen. Bill Posey and Rep. Ray Sansom and Senators Alexander, Atwater, Dawson, Deutch, Gaetz, Geller, Lawson, Peaden, Storms, Webster and Wilson, and Representatives Bogdanoff, Brown, Cannon, Coley, Cusack, Gelber, Grimsley, Hasner, Kravitz, Mayfield, Reagan, Richardson, Rivera, Sands, Seiler, Taylor, and Traviesa.

One of the key issues under debate is the extent to which the state-backed Citizens Property Insurance Corporation should be allowed to diversify the types of insurance it can sell in coastal areas, making it more competitive with private insurers. Gov. Crist promises to veto any insurance bill if it doesn’t lower premiums for homeowners.
