CRIST RELEASES BUDGET PROPOSAL

Gov. Charlie Crist has proposed a $71.2 billion budget for 2007-08, down 3 percent from the spending plan proposed by Gov. Jeb Bush in 2006 because of decreased revenue.

About $2.9 billion is designated for agriculture and natural resources, including: $68.25 million for alternative energy funding, $357.7 million for Agriculture and Consumer Services, $2.2 billion for environmental protection (including a $100 million increase in funding for the state’s Florida Forever land acquisition program), $100 million for the Everglades, $50 million for Lake Okeechobee, $40 million for relief to the Caloosahatchee and St. Lucie estuaries, and $291.6 million for the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
