ALLIANCE HOSTS RECEPTION FOR FARM BILL SUPPORTERS

The Specialty Crop Farm Bill Alliance hosted a wine reception on Feb. 7 in the foyer of the Rayburn Building in Washington, D.C., for new members of Congress and their agriculture staff members. About 80 attendees sampled hors d’ouevres and wines from around the United States. Congressman Collin Peterson, chairman of the House Agriculture Committee, attended.

FFVA, part of the Specialty Crop Farm Bill Alliance, is pleased with the strong focus on specialty crops in the Bush administration’s proposed Farm Bill, which was unveiled recently. The proposal does not include direct payments to specialty crop producers. Rather, it benefits FFVA members by targeting nearly $5 billion to support specialty crops in a number of ways: increasing the emphasis on nutrition in food assistance programs – including school meals – through the purchase of fruits and vegetables, funding specialty crop research, fighting trade barriers and expanding export markets.
