PETERSON PUSHES TO KEEP COOL IMPLEMENTATION DATE OF 2008

House Agriculture Chairman Collin Peterson (D-MN) told a meeting of the National Farmers Union March 8 that he is determined that mandatory country of origin labeling will go into effect Sept. 20, 2008, and not at an earlier date supported by the farm organization.

Peterson said he thinks USDA’s implementing regulations are unworkable and wants to see them re-written. He also told the group that if agribusiness or other interests try to repeal mandatory labeling, it will go to a floor vote and pass by 300 votes.
