ISSUE 1158

SPECIALTY CROP BILL INTRODUCTION DELAYED UNTIL MARCH 20

It was reported in last week’s Rap-Up that introduction of the House version of the specialty crop legislation for inclusion in the new farm bill would be March 15. The new expected day for lawmakers to introduce the Equitable Agriculture Today for a Healthy America Act (EAT Healthy America Act) is March 20.

FFVA has been active as a part of the Specialty Crop Alliance, a group of 90 specialty crop organizations, in educating legislators as to the importance of fruits, vegetables and other non-program crops. In its most recent effort, FFVA sent a letter to members of the Florida congressional delegation asking them to consider co-sponsoring the measure.

FFVA President Mike Stuart serves as co-chair of the Specialty Crop Alliance along with Tom Nassif of Western Growers Association and John Keeling, National Potato Council.

Original sponsors as of Rap-Up deadline are: Rep. Dennis Cardoza (D-CA), Randy Kuhl (R-NY), Rep. John Salazar (D-CO), Rep. Adam Putnam (R-FL), Rep. Rick Larsen (D-WA), and Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA).

A Senate version of the measure is expected to be introduced March 22.
