May 28, 2007 ISSUE 1168 FDACS ANNOUNCES NEW TOMATO SAFETY PROGRAM The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) announced May 25 that it will institute food safety regulations governing all aspects of tomato production in Florida. The program is part of a general agriculture bill signed by Gov. Charlie Crist. The Florida Tomato Exchange devised the plan with FDACS to assure consumer confidence in Florida tomatoes. "Florida is the nation's largest producer of fresh tomatoes, and our department and industry are committed to doing all we can to make sure that our crop is the safest that it possibly can be," said Florida Agriculture Commissioner Charles Bronson.
