May 28, 2007 ISSUE 1168 UNITED, PMA ENDORSE COMMON PRINCIPLES The Produce Marketing Association and United Fresh Produce Association announced May 23 that each haS endorsed similar resolutions calling for a federal food safety regulatory framework. "Such standards should be uniform and should apply consistently to an individual commodity or commodity group regardless of its place of production," said United Chairman Emanuel Lazopoulos and PMA Chairman Peter Goulet in a joint news release. In developing the standards, the groups pointed to the California leafy greens industry's work with the state in developing Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) metrics for that industry. "These metrics can serve as a basis for FDA commodity-specific guidance for leafy greens GAPs, taking into account needed variation in regional production and additional stakeholder input through a notice and comment period," the release said.
