ARIZONA GOVERNOR SIGNS TOUGH IMMIGRATION BILL

Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano signed a bill July 2 that requires employers to verify the legal status of their employees under penalty of having their business licenses suspended. A second offense could result in a permanent revocation of the state business license. The sanctions are some of the toughest against employers who are convicted of knowingly hiring illegal immigrants.

Gov. Napolitano admitted the bill has shortcomings, but urged state lawmakers to reconvene to fix its problems, saying she had moved forward “because Congress has failed miserably,” she said in a statement.
