USDA EXTENDS COMMENT PERIOD ON REGULATIONS FOR MOVEMENT OF FLORIDA CITRUS

USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) announced July 24 it is extending the comment period to August 7 on the proposed rule amending its citrus canker regulations to eliminate pre-harvest grove inspection for all Florida citrus moving across state lines.

The proposed rule would instead focus on sampling each lot of citrus at the packinghouse level to ensure the fruit is disease-free. APHIS proposed the rule because a risk management analysis concluded that packinghouse inspection provides an effective safeguard against the spread of canker to other states.

For additional information about the rule and how to submit comments, see the July 27 Federal Register or view the APHIS news release posted at www.aphis.usda.gov.
