CITRUS RESEARCH CENTER CELEBRATES 90 YEARS, DEDICATES NEW PATHOLOGY BUILDING

As the Citrus Research and Education Center in Lake Alfred celebrated its 90th anniversary Nov. 7 with the dedication of its new Citrus Pathology Building, industry leaders communicated the need for Florida and its competitors to work together on meaningful research to combat threats like citrus greening and citrus canker.

Hugh Thompson, president of Cutrale USA, a Brazilian run company, said, “We need for the Florida grower to be successful. And the
future [of Florida citrus] will depend on what goes on here. I don’t want to put any pressure on you, but you may decide the future of our industry,” Thompson said.

The center is part of the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. It was funded by both Florida and Brazilian interests including the estate of Florida citrus industry supporter Margaret Ross, donations from Cutrale USA and Florida citrus growers as well as a state matching grant
