COMMITTEE PASSES SWFWMD RESTORATION PROJECT

The House Environmental Preservation Committee passed the West-Central Florida Water Restoration Action Plan on March 19. The bill would allow the Southwest Florida Water Management District to raise water levels, clean rivers and build reservoirs in the Southern Water Use Caution Area.

The project is expected to take about 17 years to complete. The total cost is expected to be $1.8 billion over 17 years, the district says. Of these costs, it is anticipated that approximately one-third will need to be derived from state and federal sources.

The West-Central Florida Water Restoration Action Plan includes construction of surface water reservoirs on the Peace and Kissimmee rivers, restoration of the Upper Peace River and lakes in Polk and Highlands counties, and partnerships with growers to reduce groundwater use through the construction of small surface water reservoirs
