"The many regulations have made me aware of the many hoops that farmers must leap through. As a regulator, I can sympathize and certainly do my best to form a good working relationship with the ag community." Those are the words of a participant in FFVA's 2010 Spring Regulatory Tour, the week of March 22. The words, taken from a post-tour survey, sum up what many in the regulatory community say following the "reg tours," held every two years by FFVA's Environmental & Pest Management Division.

John Hoffman, Barron Coller-Silver

"The many regulations have made me aware of the many hoops that farmers must leap through. As a regulator, I can sympathize and certainly do my best to form a good working relationship with the ag community."

"I have a lot of respect for agriculture and the issues they face. It definitely was good to see it in person, though."

"The tour gave me a perspective of operations that happen in the field, the BMPs that are in play, and the measures farmers take to reduce spray drift, runoff and non-point-source pollution.”

Organized by FFVA Vice President of Industry Resources Dan Botts, the tour provides regulators a firsthand look at production practices and the opportunity to discuss pesticide use and regulation with growers. Representatives from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the South Florida Water Management District spent the week visiting agriculture production from Naples to Belle Glade.

The group toured operations including sod, ornamentals, citrus, sugar cane, tomatoes and various vegetables.

Sod production explained at King Ranch."I understand that the regs we generate can have real-world consequences and that the farmers in Florida have environmental considerations in mind in their day-to-day operations ."
