FFVA'S DAN BOTTS TO SERVE ON SPECIALTY CROP COMMITTEE

Maitland, Fla. (March 23, 2995) - FFVA's Director, Environmental & Pest Management Division, Dan Botts has been named to the National Agricultural Research, Extension, Education, and Economics Advisory Board's Specialty Crop Committee. The new committee is responsible for studying the scope and effectiveness of research, extension, and economic programs affecting the specialty crop industry.

The Advisory Board's executive committee appointed eight members to the Specialty Crop Committee during its biannual meeting earlier this month in Washington, DC.

"The committee makes recommendations to USDA on critical agriculture policies, and we are gratified to have someone of Dan's expertise sitting at the table," said FFVA President Mike Stuart.

The Specialty Crop Committee was established by Congress under Section 303 of the Specialty Crops Competitiveness Act of 2004, which President George Bush signed into law December 21, 2004. The legislation was intended to "ensure an abundant and affordable supply of highly nutritious fruits, vegetables, and other specialty crops for American consumers and international markets by enhancing the competitiveness of United States-grown specialty crops."

Dr. Walter Armbruster of Farm Foundation will chair the committee. Other committee members include Dr. Jeffrey Armstrong, Dean of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources at Michigan State University; William J. Lyons, Jr., a former California secretary of agriculture; Craig Regelbrugge, Senior Director of Government Relations for the American Nursery and Landscape Association; and Dr. Philip Nelson, head of the Department of Food Sciences at Purdue University.

Florida Fruit & Vegetable Association, located in Maitland, is an agricultural trade organization representing Florida's producers of fruits, vegetables and other crops.
