STUDY: FRUITS, VEGETABLES CAN HELP PREVENT ORAL CANCER

Scientists from the University of Magna Grecia Medical School and the Second University of Naples Medical School have found that intake of fruits and vegetables is inversely associated with occurrence of oral cancer. The research team published its findings in the May issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (83, 5:1126-34, 2006).

The research showed that each portion of fruit and/or vegetable consumed per day reduced the risk of oral cancer by about 49 percent.

FARM TO FUEL SUMMIT SCHEDULED

The Farm to Fuel Summit, sponsored by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services will be held August 30-September 3, 2006 at the Omni Orlando Resort at ChampionsGate. The event will address research, production and distribution of renewable fuels.

FORMER UF/IFAS VICE PRESIDENT HONORED FOR SERVICE

Jim Davidson, former University of Florida vice president for agriculture and natural resources, has been honored with the E.T. York Distinguished Service Award for his contributions to the people of Florida through UF agriculture and natural resource programs. Davidson is the third recipient since the award was established in 1983, following former vice presidents for agriculture E.T. York and Ken Tefertiller.
