FROM THE HARVESTER, MAY 1983
WORLD’S LARGEST SALAD
The main feature this year of Belle Glade’s Annual Black Gold Jubilee was a huge tossed salad consisting of salad items grown in the area.
Vying for a place in the Guinness Book of World Records, the salad-makers tossed the ingredients in a portable swimming pool, and claimed to have made the World’s Largest Salad.
Included in the salad mixture were 300 pounds of carrots, 400 pounds of red radishes and 120 pounds of white radishes, 250 pounds of celery and 180 pounds of tomatoes. These were served on a bed of about 29,000 heads of lettuce – iceberg, endive, escarole, romaine, leaf, bibb, napa, with red and Chinese cabbage.
The total weight of the mammoth salad was 57,685 pounds.
The gala event was “tossed” by civic leaders with the help of growers in the Belle Glade community.
