STATE SENATE AG COMMITTEE APPROVES USE OF AUSTRALIAN PINE AS WINDBREAK

The Florida Senate Agriculture Committee approved a measure April 3 to allow citrus growers to test the Australian pine as windbreak to help protect groves from the spread of disease.

After much research by the citrus industry and travel to Argentina, where the tree has been used successfully as a windbreak, this variety of the Australian pine is one step closer to being de-listed as a prohibited plant. This tree does not spread rapidly like its more invasive relative with the same name. Five growers in St. Lucie, Martin and Indian River counties will conduct a pilot program to see how it well the trees work
